And ultimately, the boy wins his fight and becomes successful and happy despite his poor circumstances. For the boy, loss - the loss of love, the loss of opportunity, and the loss of his family - becomes common and something which he fights against despite having few resources to win his fight. However, the boy must also contend with a burgeoning addiction to opioids, a drug that has become a plague that is affecting the entire country, particularly rural parts of the United States.

He is a star athlete who excels in nearly every aspect of the sports that he plays. At school, the boy has one thing he is successful at athletics. To succeed, though, the boy must get an education, something that is a struggle for him. While dealing with his life as an orphan and child laborer, the boy must also get educated despite the schools in his area being dilapidated and not well-funded.

The boy is also forced to work illegally as a child laborer. While in foster care, the boy must contend with several problems and issues, the biggest of which are often the other children he must deal with. Compared to his mother and those around him, he has more going for him than usual.Įventually, the boy's mother dies, and he is forced to go into foster care, something which he doesn't want to do and which will not make an easy life for him. He also developed tremendous intelligence, a brilliant wit, and a knack for survival that is unrivaled. For one, he has inherited his good looks and his copper-colored hair from his father. The boy, however, had more to work with than his mother. Prior to the birth of the woman's child, the man with whom she had the boy died and was thus unable to support his new son. Other than a very small single-wide trailer in which she and her new baby lived, the woman also has very few possessions. The boy's mother had little to work with financially and otherwise.
